So I took a leap of faith and started using time machine. I just completely reformatted my iMac because of some issues in software, and now I am transferring backed up files back onto my iMac. I received the following error, "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access (specific file name)."
My question is how do I change this so I don't have to keep authorizing each file that has this error, as there are a lot. I have changed my admin and user passwords, via disk utility on OS disc, and I'm still . Thanks, jmwmnl

Log in as the root user, then do the restore. It really cuts down on the OS harassing you for password, password, password, etc.

Don't log in as root, that can have a lot of nasty effects you don't want. What application are you using to do the restore? Are you using Migration Assistant, or just a straight Finder copy?

I suspect you use the Finder to restore. You should use Migration Assistant instead. Once you give us more details, I'm sure we can help you.

That's correct, I was using just a straight drag and drop deal. I ran both verify permissions and fix permissions as soon as I started having problems. What is the difference between drag 'n drop, and migration assistant. I've never used migration assistant other than when updating my OS.
Thanks again,
jmwmnl

And when I use migration assistant, am I just updating user account info, or specific files/apps?

Then it's obvious why it doesn't work. You should simply import your old user and be done with it via Migration Assistant. You're trying to do this manually and thus you're making your life unnecessarily difficult. The files are locked for a reason (they have been created `on a different machine' as far as Time Machine is concerned) and hence, you don't have immediate access.

In Migration Assistant (located in /Applications/Utilities), you can choose to migrate any of the following: system-wide network settings, specific users accounts, applications, etc. The interface is pretty much self-explanatory. Follow the instructions on this page and then go for a walk, spend some quality time with your SO and a few hours later, all your data has been transferred. (The amount of time depends on the amount of data.)
