I'm currently running 10.6.2 on an Intel iMac, and browsing with Safari 4.0.4 and Firefox 3.6. In both I have Block Pop-up Ads checked (if that's significant). Whenever I hover my cursor over an object in a web page (radio button, ad, etc), after about 1 second a little yellow text box appears next to the cursor to give me info or hints about that object. It doesn't appear with every object, and not all sites. I believe I was able to disable this before years ago but can't remember how. Suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Terminate the tooltips | Software | Mac OS X Hints | Macworld

If you despise tooltips, and never want to see them again accidentally, the easiest thing to do is set the initial delay to a large value, such as 10 seconds. Unless you leave your mouse hovering over a control for a really long time, you’ll never see a tooltip again. To do this globally, just copy and paste this command into Terminal, then press Return:

defaults write -g NSInitialToolTipDelay -int 10000

As the linked article reads, you can get the tooltips delayed in just a given app instead globally, e.g.

defaults write com.apple.safari NSInitialToolTipDelay -int 10000

or

defaults write com.apple.iPhoto NSInitialToolTipDelay -int 10000

I doubt that will work for Firefox though or any other non-Cocoa app.

For Firefox, you need to change browser.chrome.toolbar_tips to false in the about:config settings.

angelmb,
Thanks, that did it. No effect in Firefox like Art said, but Safari's my primary browser. I appreciate it guys.
