While sweeping my HD i found that there is a ~/PRIVATE/var/vm/sleepimage file of about 4.1GB.
Is it safe to delete this file to free disk space?

That file is where your Mac saves its memory when it goes to sleep. It should not be deleted.

I believe that it is safe to trash the sleepimage file. It gets recreated every time the machine goes to sleep, after all.

It is safe to delete it but it is pointless to do so. It will be recreated and thus you won't be saving any disk space.

If you really want to gain that disk space you have to give up on safe sleep entirely. Then you can safely delete the sleepimage file and it won't be recreated.
to turn it off:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
to re-enable:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3

There are other ways to gain HD space. Best one is to get a larger HD. what laptop do you have?
