When FedEx brings my new MBP, I'll be faced with migrating from an old machine to the new one. I know Migration Assistant is easy and efficient. What I need is an explanation of how I can be sure that the quirks that have been introduced into the old system over the years won't be migrated along with all the applications, documents, libraries, etc. For example, my System Preferences lock up the first time I try to open them, then after a Force Quit they open fine the second time. The Apple Store guys couldn't fix the problem and I don't want to re-inherit it. And I'm sure that my current machine is probably fighting a whole bunch of little speed battles, thanks to years of downloading third-party apps, that I'm not smart enough to know about or deal with.

In short, what are some strategies for keeping the brand spanking new system unmessed up by migration?

Thanks.

Skip MA altogether, it's a CF in my experience. Install your apps, copy your files.

I would try MA first. If it "doesn't work" or becomes a CF, you can always wipe and start fresh.
(I've used MA hundreds of times with nary an issue.)

What's a CF?

I think AKcrab has a good idea.

Huh. I was trying to figure out how a Compact Flash card fitted into all this.

FWIW, I migrated a G5 running 10.3.9 to a new iMac running SL, using Migration Assistant. I didn't do it at first startup, though. I did it later, once I had all the Apple updates installed on the iMac, as well as any new software. The migration went well. The only issues I've encountered were with some older fonts. That's not any fault of MA, though.

Try MA first. In 99% of the cases it does exactly what you're looking for.

You can always wipe and do it another way if you run into any trouble with MA.

If you're worried about settings carrying over issues, tell MA to migrate your stuff w/o migrating settings.

I've migrated countless machines over the years (my user account was created on 10.0) and I have yet to run into any problems with Migration Assistant. Only very few real bugs have emerged (e. g. in one case kernel extensions were copied that were incompatible with the new kernel) and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

You can always try other means later. In any case, you should always have a backup!
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
