Hi,
I share my computer with my wife. We share our pictures, music, files and pretty much everything else. So i don't want to create a new account for her on my computer. However, there is one thing we don't share. We don't share the same email address and we don't have the same mobile me account.

Right now, i'm logged in to my account via the Mobile Me system preference. Therefore, when i'm in iPhoto and i want to post pictures to a gallery, it's automatically saving to my Mobile Me gallery (not hers).

But if she then wants to upload to her Mobile Me, she has to go into the system preference and change the settings before she can get it to work (otherwise it posts to my gallery).

Seems like a real pain. Why can't iPhoto just save her settings and mine and before uploading allow us to choose who's account to use.

Also, when we change the user info in the MobileMe system pref, it then stops our Mail program from working properly. All of a sudden a lightning bolt shows up next to my email account and i can't check my email until i enter my password again.

Why is the MobileMe controlling the Mail program?
odd

Why not have separate accounts and use Fast User Switching between the accounts? (it is quite painless)

You can still share your photos, music libraries between the two accounts and have a shared folder for documents if needed.

It will be quite difficult to achieve what you want using the same user account.

This is the reason why multiple users and FUS exists.

Mail stops working because you're changing the MobileMe info for your MobilMe email account. Why don't you just set up an extra MobileMe mail account in the program: Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts (click the + sign). Assuming you guys don't mind being able to see each other's email (which seems to be the case if you're using the computer like this), that should work.

I have two accounts on my laptop, specifically to maintain two mobileme accounts (two websites, each with personalized domain names, one with my name and one with my business name). I use fast user switching to get back and forth to maintain each site. It works smoothly with some exceptions.

Since the iPhoto library is owned by one account, I had some erratic problems adding photos to web pages with the media browser until I went to the photo library file and with the Info screen, added full read and write permissions for the other account name.

Copy and paste doesn't work across accounts, so I've used various kludges, including publicly read/write text files and even twitter accounts to pass info back and forth.

Multiple accounts with quick switching is the way to go, just watch out for file permissions.

Why don't you simply use iDisk?

Yeah, honestly, that's exactly why Apple created fast user switching.

I guess the best question to ask at this point is why you don't want to use Fast User Switching.

I don't think he likes having to manage iTunes and iPhoto libraries between multiple users, even though there are a lot of options for sharing now.

You can have one account with a master library that you share with the other account. You don't have to put anything in the other account's library. Try it, I think you'll grow to like it.
