How do I get an accent mark above the letter "e" with Word on my Mac with OS X?

In the standard American keyboard layout, pressing Alt + e will give you a ‘hovering’ acute accent. Type in the vowel you want the accent to appear over, and you get the vowel with an acute accent. In other words, “Alt + e” followed by “e” gives é, while “Alt + e” followed by “i” will give the í used in my user name.
