Why would you never want to save documents? If you want to let some use your system on an account that gets nothing saved to it, log them in as Guest. Other than that, I don't really understand the purpose of your inquiry.

Big Mac
let me re-ask:
there is a system default to save files to the documents folder.
I never go to the documents folder. I go to the desktop.
Can I get the OS to save to the desktop.

The applications I use will remember where they last saved files and save there. I have never seen anything but documents saved by default to Documents. Movies and pictures do not default there.

Okay, in that case,

Saving everything to the desktop is. Not a good thing. I was going to call it something else, but I'll refrain.

My mac won't load the finder. I just get a spinning rainbow...

After much troubleshooting, and stumbling upon something in target disk mode...

WTF?! 9000+ items on the desktop all trying to make previews...
