Why would that happen for my OS X partition? And why isn't it also grayed out for my Boot Camp partition? And most important, how do I get that option back for OS X?

That's really strange. What was the catalyst that made the sidebar disappear? Any clues?

First, I used Terminal to change view options so I could see some hidden files. Then I tried to use a free hex editor called "Hex Editor," but it hung the two times I tried it. I reset the view options through Terminal, then rebooted into my Boot Camp partition to use a Windows hex editor I had. When I rebooted into OS X and clicked on the Finder icon, I got no sidebar and the option was grayed out. Now oddly enough, SOME folders will open WITH the sidebar, and any folders I open from those windows have a sidebar...

Tried moving the finder prefs so it re-creates them?

No, I wound up clicking the oval button at the top right of the Finder window-the button I never use... That fixed it.

I wish that button would go away!
