Friend has problems with 60Gig MacBook. Plenty of memory, but she can't do anything except email. Every other actions (apps mostly) simply freezes her system.

Repaired permissions and disk doesn't need repair.

But when I try to Verify Disk Permission via Install Disk, I get the following: "Stopped Verifying..No valid Package".

What does that mean and what needs to be done?

Thanks.

I would suggest installing SMART reporter, but you can't. I suspect failing hard drive.

The "No Valid Packages" error probably just means that you booted from a install disc that had a different version of OS X than what's on your hard drive. I wouldn't bother with it, as 1) the problem you describe is not the sort of thing that is likely to be caused by permissions, and 2) you've already run Repair Permissions once already.

Things worth trying:

1. Running "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility (not Repair Permissions)

2. Checking the SMART status, which you can do by clicking on the disk in Disk Utility and clicking the "Info" button

3. Running DiskWarrior if you have it

4. Reformatting and reinstalling OS X

5. Replacing the drive if none of the above works.

Problem is a failing drive will not always trigger SMART.

True, but that doesn't make it not worth checking.

Agreed, I just wanted to add that 'Verified' may not mean that things are OK.

I've figured it out (thanks to your replies).

Turns out that she bought her MacBook with 10.4. She ran into problems, took it to Future Shop who installed 10.5 without giving her the 10.5 disks. Cost her $140.00.

So her original Install Disk can't configure (or figure out) the 10.5 system. Hence "no valid package(?)"

I've convinced her to purchase 10.6 and an external hard drive. I'll take it from there.

(reminds me of someone who has the radiator replaced when there's only a leak in the hose).

: )

Thanks guys.
