I use Cocktail about every 10 days to keep the HD happy.. And I have been having a load of problems with a slow Verizon DSL, so I used disk utility to do everything directly, in case Cocktail misses something... The there were a couple of Permissions that it could not repair? ...So I changed my startup disk to the original Snow Leopard CD and tried with its Disk Repair - same results.

I figger'd - Hell, I'll just trash the buggers and maybe everything will be clean upon restart..but I cannot find them?! The report said to the effect..

Sys/Lib/Private ... SUD file is bad

Sys/Lib/CoreS ... is bad

Probably not the exact wording on the report but 99% correct.. Any thoughts?

It probably has nothing to do with MF Verizon but now that I have found it I would like to have it cleaned up. Thanks.

Run the attempt again, and copy the result text, so we can see the exact error messages. If need be, you can widen the DU window so it does not truncate the text.

Note that some permissions errors can be ignored.

1. You don't need to run Cocktail every 10 days to make your HD happy.

2. You don't need to worry about those messages. They're normal.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

... R5: I will accept the .. but .. you did not use in your post. It takes like 20min to run the Pref. check and it appears that you guys - CS included - did not issue a: "Stand back from your iMac... Slowly pull the plug from the wall."

I am sure if it was malware, you wudda told me quick. I appreciate the reply, I have always been grateful you folks were there if I got nervous.

CS .. I had a PC that drove an embroidery machine here for a number of years, and virtually every time I turned it on, there was a message from Seattle like; "Your computer is at risk." It was like a message from Dick Cheney every morning... My shop is a mess because of my ADHD but Cocktail is soooo easy.. I figure why not have something organized.

Cheers all - thanks again.

Jim
