I have a powerbook with tiger on it and another powerbook with leopard on it. I have the leopard system backuped on an external hard drive. If I pluged the tiger into the external drive and copied it would the leopard system upgrade the tiger system? I hope that makes since...........

Yes, but it depends on how you do the copy. You have to clone the drive (if you're talking about a normal boot drive) with a utility like Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner.
