I'm copying data from one hardrive to another.
It started at 18mb/ s
and stayed there a long time.
Today I woke up and it's still not done -- it's now at 13/mb s

Why would it get slower?

Maybe errors detected along the way and it's having to retry a lot? Plus with the lower speed later, it could be having to retrieve data from more widely dispersed fragments, which slow the transfer a lot.

How much data are you transferring and what kind of data is it?

Plus, the data rate is an average over time. I think you're well within the normal ballpark.

I have to say, copying 2TB of data should really be done by the time you wake up, unless you're using USB 1

If you copy large files your throughput will be much higher than if you copy many smaller files.

I use USB 2 for backups and i average about 15MB/s. It was disappointing at first.

FireWire is good. eSATA is real good. Enclosures with Oxford Semiconductor interface chips are good.

I recently copied a 160 GB (Gigabyte) iPhoto library from an internal drive on an iMac Intel Mac via Firewire 800 and it took about 1.5 hours. That is roughly 35 MB/s (MB = Megabyte). USB 2 can be ~ twice slower (or worse) than Firewire 800, so 13-18 MB/s would be not unusual.
