Tears hair out.

I've got this iMac 2.1 C2D (white 24in), running 10.6.7 and a Mac Mini server running 10.6.7 server. The server hosts all the non admin accounts for a small business, which are accessed on two iMacs. On one iMac all is well but the other is suffering from severe issues.

Logging into the network accounts is massively slow. On startup they don't even show up in the log in dialogue box until a local account has logged in. Then they finally show up but logging in can take 5-10 minutes. This is getting longer. The network accounts took 4 hours to show up today.

Once logged in connection to the server is fine and network processes run fine.

Any ideas?

If you cycle through the info on the login screen, does it have an IP address at the time when the login account are not appearing?
How is IP information assigned? Does it have any manual DNS entries assigned?
Are all other network related tasks normal?

Not sure on first point, log in screen just shows list of available accounts IP is assigned by DHCP server (router) and there are two DNS entries manually inputted.

edit: Oh I see what you mean. Yes, if I log into the iMac it does have an IP address assigned, even when the network account doesn't show up.

The same network account fires up just fine on the other iMac, I even relocated the errant Mac to another office to check for cable faults.

So the DNS entries point at the OS X server?
I don't suppose you can boot the iMacs off of each others OS X installs to see if the problem moves/stays the same?

Interestingly on the working mac, pointing OD to the server name (server.xxxxxx.local) works fine, but on the stroppy mac I get the error OD server not responding. If I use the IP address it works just fine. It had to be something in the DNS but client was waiting so ended up burning the Mac to the ground and gdoing a clean install.

Luckily all the client users are network users which was a god send for getting everything back up and running quickly.

DNS is where I'd look too. Once I set up some windows clients in a domain with an external dns and it did weird things.

Yep. Catches everyone out at least once, until you learn never to do that again
