It's taken me several years ! but I finally discovered that I can make a desktop alias for a folder, buried within other folders.

Same way as for apps.

Saves me a lot of clicking.

I don't want to move the folder(s) because they are in specific locations.

Just wait 'til you discover the Dock.

It's a new feature of OS X (as opposed to keeping aliases on the desktop, which, IIRC, was introduced in System 7, in 1991…).

HaHa.

My dock is already over half the width of my screen, and obviously gets wider as I open apps.

BTW, you cannot drag folders to the dock.

You've been able to drag folders to the Dock since the OS X Developer Preview 4, in 2000.

Are you having me on?

I just discovered that Command-Q quits the foreground application!

Tried to drag folder to main dock, didn't work.

However, I can drag folder to RHS of vertical separator in dock, next to trash, for some reason.
Presumably the major LHS is reserved for apps, the RHS for files and folders.

Although...

Eh...WTF?

Yes, you can make aliases everywhere you can write. Hold command-option to drag something to make an alias.

The first half of the Dock (left half/top half) is indeed reserved for applications, running and fixed. On the right half you can drop anything, including folders. The fact that there is a folder there in the default installation should be a hint.

That's the way it's always been as far as I can remember (the first version of OS X I've worked with was the Public Beta).

The split Dock was first introduced in DP4, as I said - in April 2000, if memory serves.

The separator image in the Dock was named AbbeyRoad.png way before the iTunes deal. Now it is just 'Separator'. It doesn't make any sense !!!
