I've taken the plunge and upgraded my 10.5.8 to 10.6.3 using an Apple installation disc bought legally from Amazon UK

After installing for 45 mins, I get the following message, doesn't seem to affect the running.

"where is system events "?
Above a big search box, with many entries.
Couldn't find that.
Problem solved, a 3rd party app needed updating.
I took the plunge and loaded other apps (or whatever it's called) , from installation disc, which stated 30 mins to load, but froze with 6 mins to go.
I had to power off and on to remove this.
I re-installed 10.6.3 again, inc Rosetta this time, 1hr 15 mins to install.

Again same message as above !
Problem solved, a 3rd party app needed updating.
Two initial problems, I cannot run Safari 5, as I could in 10.5.8, I had to use Safari 4 in 10.6.3.
Also, whenever I use the ⌘ key in combination with another key, as a keyboard shortcut, the shortcut works, but I get what sounds like an error beep every time. This never happened before.
I've checked Universal Access Keyboard beep, it was selected, but deselecting it didn't stop beep)
Problem solved, pressed a lot of ⌘ keys combinations and it went away !.
I will do a software update tonight during my unlimited period, to see if this helps any of the above.

I would appreciate your thoughts though, thanks.

Safari 5.0 requires 10.6.3 but 5.0.5 requires 10.6.5 so software update may well fix that one for you.

I'm not seeing any actual error message besides "where is system events?" which is more of a question than an error message?

What is the error message please?

Very quick delivery from Amazon UK, only a couple of days.

I'm having a problem updating, from 10.6.3, as software update show 5-7 hours to download 10.6.7 (1.2gb) , and my unlimited download time is only 4 hours per day.

My Mobile BB is only running at .81 mb/s tonight, has been 2.4mb/s so will wait it out for a fast night.

I wonder though, as I stopped it, and restarted with fewer options, it seemed to pick up where it left off, so perhaps download the update over a few nights ?

Since updating from 10.5.8 to 10.6.3 not really noticed much difference upfront, slight changes to desktop dock and Mail. Seems stable though now I have sorted the 3rd party conflicts. No error messages anymore.

I only really got it as part of an upgrade path to Lion, but for £21 not bad.

WTF !!!

Aah, that's better

Omg, no ..........

At least software update picks up from where it left off previously.

That's better, the vagaries of UK Mobile Broadband.

And...
After all that, it finally finished downloading 3.5 hours later.

Restart !!
Error message.. Software cannot be installed !

because the download was broken a few times ?
Looks like another long night coming up.

At least software update recognises it hasn't been installed.

@ MacNNUK, I would try to download the combo update from Apple Support with the help of a download manager like Speed Download. I have to rely on Mobile Broadband (Vodafone Spain) and never use software update for such a big downloads, which are always a overnight duty.

Also, how fast is your service?, if you don't mind me asking.

I'm with Orange MBB for a year now, but the frustration at low speeds until recently , (commonly 0.03-0.3 mb/s) due to transmitter fault for 2 months, and especially last night at trying to download 10.6.7, has prompted me to look elsewhere.
Being an Orange PAYG customer, on a phone with credit I never use, I get a £5 discount, so cost to me £10 for 3gb pcm
My contract expires in 4 months, so I'll pay it anyway.

Would you believe it, Orange have just capped me with fair useage after trying to download 1gb update 2 nights due to their slow speed and dropouts.
A phone call to them , they have lifted my cap, CS guy said he thought it was unfair.
I'm out of Orange MBB as soon as I can.

I have now signed up with plusNet UK, £6 BB, plus £13 landline, free connection, free wireless router etc, promised measured speed of 17mb/s as I am close to exchange.

As for speeds, I have created an Excel SS I monitor my useage with, screen grabs below, for my current period.
Hope it's self explanatory.

MacNNUK, you still going to go for the Lion download?

That connection does look like a pain to get stuff done with it, something like Speed Download should help with getting big files downloaded in parts. I suppose this wouldn't be the time to say I haven't had this trouble with my 8Mb broadband connection (11Mb on a good day).

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

My PlusNet BB comes through in about a week, I'll probably wait till then to update to 10.6.7

As for Lion, I like to wait and see feedback before committing.

Thanks for taking the time to upload the Excel spreadsheet.

I understand you, while my Vodafone 3G service has no cap (bloody expensive), it is still to slow for anything over 500 MB on size. So I can't download neither OS X updates, –less combo updates– nor app updates, be it XPress 'fatty' updates, you name it… Adobe updates are often not only low on size but also low on quality.

Needless to say, there is no way I can download Lion once it becomes available.
