time machine transfer to Imac with new drive

When I get to the screen that says 'click to transfer selected items'
and 'calculating' appears after the categories to be transfered - the screen goes back to the welcome screen-always ( at least 10 times anyway)
Can not transfer.
Local Apple Store put in new hard drive . They told me they installed OS 10.5.8
I had bought the OS 10.5.6 - don't know what the version was after updates over the internet.
The drive is connected directly to the computer
I have hard rebooted the computer

I booted from the OS install drive - found in the top bar menu a choice to 'restore' I did so and it worked this time! So I am back up and running.
