Prior to Lion you could download the latest XCode for Snow Leopard for a small charge through the Mac App Store, or you could download it from Apple's site if you are an Apple dev.
Now, it looks like Apple has made the XCode download available for free through the Mac App Store, but only for Lion. This might be a loophole that Apple just didn't think about and will fix in the coming days, but surely the only way to obtain XCode 4 for Snow Leopard is not to shell out to become an Apple developer?
Interesting that Apple is making XCode available for free now, but I guess with their whole iCloud infrastructure they have resources to burn

It's always been free since day one. The $5 charge for 4.0 was a short-lived anomaly.
I'm downloading the Snow Leopard version of Xcode right now, though, to archive it, just in case.

I'm still in Snow Leopard, but I just wanted to check for updates or see if I can get 4.1 for Snow Leopard. Every link seems to lead to the Lion only 4.1 version.
Let me know if you find a way for non-devs to download Xcode 4.0.x, please!

You could try making a free dev account, if they still offer those. Xcode 4.0 wasn't available to free accounts before, but now that 4.1 is free, they may have changed that.

I'm assuming what I have is a free developer account since I can authenticate and access the developer part of the site, but I'm getting the following:
You must be an iOS or Mac Developer Program member to download Xcode 4 or you can download Xcode 4.1 for Lion for free from the Mac App Store.
I'm hoping this is just an oversight that will be corrected. Looking at larger picture stuff, can you download previous versions of apps on the Mac App Store? If not, this sounds like a very useful and needed feature!

It looks like you need a paid dev account to get Xcode 4 for Snow Leopard now.

Appears that way, but this is kind of silly. I'm hoping it was just an oversight on Apple's part.

xcode 4 has been $5 for quite a number of months.
Looks like it's free now.

I expect Apple be be generous with their resources from now on given that they have this whole iCloud infrastructure in place now.

I'd expect most things to be free on the App Store to further push adoption.

The "install" button is available for me for "XCode for Snow Leopard" since like Lion, XCode automatically deletes the installer, so it looks like I could get XCode back that way. However, for somebody that hasn't already downloaded XCode for Snow Leopard or Leopard and needs it, it looks like they are SOL.

What do you mean like Lion, it deletes the installer?
