my fairly new iMac keeps showing me a non-existent 'ejecting disc' problem
it insists in showing me an 'ejecting disc' problem when i haven't got a disc in and i am touching nothing at all!
could someone more knowledgeable than me tell me how to stop this irritating message?
it reappears every ten minutes or so
its just done it again!

Disconnect your keyboard and see if it still happens. Disconnect all USB devices and check.
MacBook 2.0GHz CD; MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz Late '08; PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1GHz; 3x Xserve G4 1GHz; Mac Mini 2GHz; Big pile of broken and working bits;

Might be a loose cable connection to the optical drive. Does it give you a volume name or other identifier in the error text? So we could guess which volume?

Boot from your install DVDs and run Apple Hardware Test. Insert the DVD and reboot with Option held down. An extra partition on the DVD will appear in the boot selector, which contains the hardware tests.
