I know that this should be a flawless procedure, but I had an experience some years ago that gives me pause. I think that around 8 years ago I tried to change my password, which seemed to work fine for getting access to my computer. However, even though I had never deliberately pass word protected any of my files or applications, some of them would not open without my authorization password. Thus, when I tried to use my new password, it did not work. But when I put in my old password, it did. I have no idea of what dynamic was to blame but I want to avoid this problem at all costs. Out of frustration, I just defaulted back to my old password and never tried to change it again.

I will soon be transferring all of my data over to a new MBA and do not want it to inherit issues like that. Has anyone ever had a similar problem? If so, what should I do to avoid it? Thanks

Which password are you talking about: your main login password or like a password for Filevault? Changing your main login password should have nothing to do with getting access to your files. It's sounds like you were having some type of permissions issue.

Just change the password. It should be fine.
