i'm trying to copy a 130GB aperture library file from an external HD to my macbook pros main HD. i have about 200GB free on my main HD (so there should be enough space). however, every time i drag the file over it pauses for a moment and calculates and then says: there isn't enough free disk space.

this is clearly a mistake. i have restarted, use disk utility and still haven't had success. it can copy smaller files back and forth with no problems, but not this 130GB one. any ideas on how to get it copied over?

I have noticed that same issue under Lion.

You can copy a few larger files without a problem, but once the combined size exceeds some threshold, there is that error. Seems to be a new Finder bug.

yeah it almost seems like it needs double the space to copy a file. so if i'm copying a 100GB file, it needs 200GB+ free to actually do the copy.

anyway, i used the cp -r Aperture.aplibrary ~/Home... unix command to try copying the file. it worked fine.

edit: turtle, i just realized you edited your post from mv to cp. i did run the cp command successfully.

i'm not sure what happens if i move it. but i read the man pages on cp and mv and it seems like they are identical with the difference being that mv deletes the fils it copied over AFTER COPYING them. so i'd assume it would have worked the same, instead of me manually deleting it.

i used cp though since it was my aperture library file/folder and i didn't want to chance losing it in case the mv command moved files on the fly. (i read the man pages after...)

Tetenal seems to be right, it's a Finder bug then.

Good to know that big files cause issues with the Finder.

For others having the same problem, cp -a might be a better flag to use since it will preserve more stuff. The -v flag will show the progress too.

Who would ever need to copy a file larger than 640KB?
