Booting in 32-bit mode?

Greetings.
I am doing some troubleshooting for a research application that is not functioning properly since the developers updated to a new version.
They have asked me to boot in 32-bit mode to troubleshoot.
How do I do that on a Pro MacBook?
This is the March 2011 release. I am using Mac OS X 10.7.1.

Maybe he meant run the application in 32-bit mode? You do that with a checkbox on the Get Info dialog of that application in Finder.
What mode the kernel runs in should not matter at all, unless kernel extensions are involved.

This research application is a universal binary. There is no "run in 32-bit" checkbox with this application... I've seen it in others but not in this one.
