Is anyone else experiencing random freezes since upgrading to Lion? I've had three now on my Mac Pro. Every time, the music in iTunes keeps playing, but the entire screen is frozen solid. I tried SSH'ing in today, and I couldn't run TOP, but I was able to at least initiate a reboot (the skinny popped up on the screen over the frozen image of the stuff I was doing when it froze). After a few minutes, I got sick of waiting and just did a hard reboot. Very annoying. I never had problems like this in previous OSes. Previous recent OSes I mean. I haven't had this happen on my laptop, but I haven't spend nearly as many hours on that as I do on my desktop.

No, but have had this happen in Leopard, after a version upgrade.I had to do a Combo updater re-install, starting up in Safe mode (shift key). Am not sure whether you should do this now, or wait for the imminent release of 10.7.2

Lion freezes on me quite a bit. Mostly happens after the screen goes off. No mouse movement. In fact just happened 20 minutes ago, had to hard reboot. Like the 15th time since Lion was installed.

Yes, I have this happen to me as well, but it's very rare, like once every month. I have to hold the power button and force a reboot.
This one time, at Boot Camp, I stuck a flute up my PC.

Interesting. Maybe 10.7.2 will be better.

That sounds very shoddy. OS X should never freeze given properly working hardware. If it's happening repeatedly either the particular installation, that particular hardware, or Lion itself is fatally flawed. We're not talking about OS 9 here; OS 9 level stability should never be accepted from OS X. Not from 10.0 and certainly not ten years later from 10.7. Never. Ever. Ever. Ever. Never. If you upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard and are experiencing such pitiful reliability, I say downgrade and spread the word that you had a bad experience with Lion. More importantly, if you're on a new Lion pre-installed Mac and you're seeing it, take your computer to an Apple Store and demand repair or replacement. Don't just put up with it. That would be the worst possible thing to do.

For me, they've been a particular type of freeze. Not a system crash, not a kernel panic. Things are still running, it's just the screen itself that has frozen. So it's not as dire as you make it sound. But it still is a bad thing, but a bad thing that will likely get fixed soon.

System crashes (hard freezes) with a message in multiple languages saying you need to press power to shut off and restart have been WIDELY reported on Apple's Support forums. Seem to mainly affect 27" iMacs running Lion. I get these freezes on a daily basis and there is no rhyme or reason as to what causes them. People on Apple's Support Forums are leaning towards it being a video card issue. Not sure I buy that as I get them consistently when downloading large files. For example, I can't DL any TV shows from iTunes without freezing. I couldn't even DL Lion from the App store without freezing. Had to get it from my MBA.

Never had a crash or freeze of any kind on my 13" MBA running Lion.

The multi-language restart message is technically known as a Kernel Panic, Mr. Jingles. It's not a great sign if many Lion users are experiencing them.

I just had another freeze. This one was slightly different, in that I had a spinning beachball. But everything else was frozen solid. Even the clock. Music in itunes still played until the end of the current song, then it stopped. I couldn't ssh into my machine. And mouse tracking was really odd, very skippy. That makes 4 odd system crashes since upgrading to Lion. Some days, I really wish I had stuck with snow leopard. Fewer crashes and no "productivity-handbrake" aka Mission Control.

Just had one more. BBEdit beachballed. I tried to wait it out but it never came back. The files that were opened were on a share connected over the internet. So then I opened the shared folder in the Finder and tried to navigated it, and then the Finder froze. Then a minute later, the whole computer froze again. The moues worked but nothing else. I could SSH in, but I couldn't actually DO anything. Eventually I had to do a hard reboot. It makes me think there is a bug in Lion's AFP system. I ALWAYS keep my computer connected to my server, and Leopard / Snow Leopard never had crashes like this.

Update:
If you're wondering if I'm still having system crashes, I am not. Here was my solution: http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/...-snow-leopard/
