I have recently moved the contents of my HD from my iMac (Leopard) to my new 13" MBA (Lion). I am trying to organize my files and folders which entails moving them to new locations, as well as deleting redundant copies that somehow formed when I did the data transfer. I am encountering a variety of issues that are making it difficult to access my old files, especial video and trailer files I downloaded from the internet.
t seems to me that activities that previously were simple and straightforward have now become needlessly complex. Before, when I wanted to move a file, I just moved it. When I wanted to delete a file, I just sent it to the trash. But now there is a roadblock to even the most simple of tasks, and I do not understand why it has been made so complicated.
Where most everything worked on Leopard, nothing seems to work here in Lion. And I am not using any files that require the older Mac version to view or run since the programs have all been upgraded in Lion (or so I thought). Here is a list of issues I would very much appreciate your assistance to resolve.
1. when my files were transferred to my new computre, duplicate folders were made (from old Mac) some are empty folders while others are complete copies of the originals. I cannot delete the copies because a display warns that I do not have permission: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items.
I am the only user on this computer, and no one else has permission. What can I do to not only move files or folders, but to also delete them?
2. In the application Preview, my photos show that they are all locked. So, if I want to make any changes, I must first duplicate the photo or jpeg and place it into another folder. Since I have over 10,000 photos, this is going to be impossible to do one by one. Also, I do not know how to unlock them all at once. I need a way to eliminate the locked status so I can freely use them. And then IF I do successfully copy all the photos, it will not allow me to delete the originals. This is the warning note that appears:
The file “01-1.jpeg” is locked because you haven’t made any changes to it recently. If you want to make changes to this document, click Unlock. To keep the file unchanged and work with a copy, click Duplicate.
3. I have a lot of movie trailers and video downloads from the internet, but I am no longer able to view them. I get this message pop-up: The document “trailer5” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.
To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More.
4. To complicate matters, all of my other files are LOCKED, and require my password to change anything. And even that does not allow me to delete or move the original files. If I have a folder in a a particular location and want to move it to another location, it will not move. It will only copy the folder in the new location and leave the original in place. But I do not want the original file or folder in place. I want it in the location where I tried to move it. What do i do?
5. when I open a folder there is no information at the bottom bar to tell me where the folder is located (or chain of locations) or how many files are in the folder.
6. how do I contact Applecare tech support online? I am in places where I do not have access to a phone.
Thanks ahead for taking the time to help me. It is disappointing to have so many issues over seemingly simple things to prevent me from working and using my new MBA.
