in the new Lion, there does not seem to be any setting where I can put items into the trash without them automatically getting deleted. It does warn you ahead, "Are you sure you want to delete....? This item will be deleted immediately. You can’t undo this action." This feature is new to me, as in previous OS I could load up my trash over time and then decide when I wanted to empty it. Any suggestions as to how to get it back into that function? Thanks ahead.

Finder menu (when in the Finder) -> Preferences -> Advanced.

Note that if you delete something off of certain drives, like a network drive, the item will always be deleted immediately.

nothing works to change the function. There are just 2 commands that relate to the trash:
1. show warning before emptying the trash
2. empty trash securely

I have turned them both on and both off, and one on and the other off. I have run out of options. I have even restarted my computer. Any more suggestions?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. This has led me to try to change the Sharing an Permissions pane for my Users folder. Apparently I do not have the permission since it was shown that I, the admin, only had permission to read, which is very strange. I have no idea how this got screwed up because no one ever has had access to my computer.

As I am trying to remedy this issue, a part of the instructions on The X Lab site has me stopped cold;

Warning: When using the instructions in the Mac Help document, do not use the Apply to enclosed items option, if available.

So, when I go to the Mac OS site, there is no information specific to Lion, 10.7 . There are instructions for 10.5 and 10.6. So, I naturally chose 10.6 since it is the latest incarnation listend there. However, back on The X Lab site there is a specific warning NOT to use the Apply button once you have changed the permissions status:

So, now I am afraid to to press the Apply button, which, I believe, is necessary to complete the change. Something is just not right if one site tells me NOT press the Apply button, and the Mac site tells me to. I have no idea why this warning appeared in the The X Lab instructions, but I tend toward caution when I read Warning signs. What should I do?

Thanks for your continued assistance.

Why don't you try repairing permissions from Disk Utility first before manually changing them?

I think you should be looking at your home folder (the folder inside the Users folder that is named the same as your login name), not the Users folder itself. If your home folder is confirmed writable, look at your trashes folder by selecting "Go to location" from the Finder's "Go" menu, and type in ~/Trashes and hit enter. This should make your Trashes folder visible, from which you can get info and confirm that it too is writable. If it doesn't exist, then that is the cause of your troubles.

Please note that you are calling it the "Apply" button, but what it really is and is called is "Apply to enclosed items". Hopefully now that you notice this, you can see the implicit difference between "Apply" and "Apply to enclosed items," and you can easily guess why the latter might be unwanted.

I'm not looking at Lion right now, but in other versions of Mac OS, no "Apply" command is needed or offered after changing the permissions states through the Finder's "get info" window, they are applied immediately when you change the switch/popup.
