Just upgraded to Lion and all is going well except iPhotos. I'm using the '09 version. When I came to open iPhone, a message said I needed to update my iPhoto library. I used Option-Apple keys (or whatever) and checked several boxes (rebuild thumbnails, library etc). Now iPhoto opens but the photo areas are all black screens. Only the Apple explanation pages for Faces and Places will display. I do have backups on Time Machine and elsewhere. Any suggestions, please?

Additional info. When clicking iPhoto, the message "Your thumbnails need to be upgraded" appears. I choose "upgrade" and it takes me instantly to the black screens, so I don't think any upgrading has been done. I tried importing some photos as a test, and each time iPhoto quit after importing.
