....is a d*ck!

Just did a drive upgrade on a 2009 Mac Mini. I actually pre-installed Lion onto a 500GB disk before installing it using another Mac Mini as host in order to save downtime.

I put the new disk in and hooked the old one up to USB but when I got to the setup assistant/migration assistant to migrate data from the old disk it kept insisting that I "already have a user account by that name" and must rename or not migrate that user. I renamed it and got the same message. Its retarded, there were no users present at all. I elected to create new admin user by going through the setup process and then ran migration assistant again with the same results. I eventually decided not to migrate the users but this could have been seriously annoying if I had needed those users. What gives?

I've used it twice now (once from Windows, and once from Time Machine when completely re-installing onto a replacement disk after a hardware failure) with no issues.

When you say you "pre-installed Lion [...] before installing it using another Mac mini as host", what does that mean?

What exactly did you do?

My migration from my old Snow Leopard MacBook to my new Lion MBP was pretty flawless. Well, other than the fact that Safari suddenly remembered Bookmarks that I deleted years ago, and I had to spend a bunch of time deleting them again.

But my previous migration from older PowerBook to MacBook had the exact problem you mentioned: a complaint about being unable to migrate a user by that name. I had to rename, but it did work, but it still threw me for a loop and left me annoyed.

I connected a brand new 500GB drive to a 2007 Mac Mini via USB, booted from my USB Lion installer and installed Lion onto the new 500GB drive. When it booted into Lion I powered off before setting it up.

I then installed the drive into the mini, hooked the old boot drive up via USB and tried to use the migration assistant btu it kept giving me that weird error.
