As I have mentioned around here before, I have a problem with the Mac never sleeping by itself - the symptom is that it activates the Dashboard. I always assumed that it was because I have active corners enabled, the top left corner is Dashboard, and the mouse would wander in that direction with time.

Recently, I reset the active corners to only trigger when I had control held down (because the active corners would activate when in a VM fullscreen mode, and I didn't want that) but when I come back to Mac now, the Dashboard is active anyway. That eliminates my explanation of a wandering mouse, so... what's going on here? Can something else be triggering the Dashboard showing?

I have recently learned that a Mac running Snow Leopard will wake up if sent a "wake" packet even if "wake on LAN" is disabled in Energy Saver. This may have been part of my own Mac sleep issue. It makes me wonder what widgets you have, and whether one of them, or some app, may somehow be activating Dashboard for you.

I'm going to mess with the firewall to try to block "wake" packets, and I'm also going to look at what my widgets might be doing behind my back.

It never wakes when sent to sleep manually, so I doubt that that is the issue.

I use a a Tv program widget (called EPG, aimed at the Swedish market), iStat, Stickies, and the Apple and Calculator weather apps. Personally I suspect iStat (because the Tv widget is never updated when I wake the display - it starts updating when I move the mouse), but I have disabled the Smart checker.
