Hi everyone,

i really hope someone can help me, as I'm in a bit of a bind whichever way I turn at the moment, it seems.

I have done a clean install of Lion 7.3 and want to migrate my mail from SL into Lion.

What I have always done before is simply copy my backup of my Mail and Mail Downloads folder back in to the User\Library folder and hey presto everything was there, sweet as.

However, this doesn't seem to work with moving SL mail to Lion (I made the Library folder visible) - so after some to-ing and fro-ing, I decided to reinstall SL, bring the mail back into there, do an upgrade to Lion, backup the new mail folders, do a clean install of Lion, and put the backed-up Lion mail folders back.

however, I now don't even seem to be able to put the mail back properly into SL mail now.

If anyone is able to offer any assistance that would be great!

Thanks,

Matt

Are you really still using a POP email account instead of IMAP? I'd highly recommend moving to IMAP to avoid issues like this.

After a copy, have you tried rebuilding the mailbox (Mailbox menu)?

If you still have a version thats running, try exporting all your mailboxes one by one. Then import those mbox files into the new one after adding your account settings.

This IMAP thread seems to occupy a few threads here on MacNN. I migrate my Mail.app email by copying the Mail support folders and files. Doesn't Apple's Migration thing do it too?

If you are having problems with the import or folder transplant, this is a perfect opportunity to ditch POP, which is a good idea regardless.

Doesn't Migration Assistant do this?

I'm almost regretting going to IMAP. A whole bunch of my mail has somehow been tagged as having the date of the migration, instead of the original date, despite the fact the dates are quite clearly indicated in the headers. It becomes extremely cumbersome for looking through your old mail messages when 20% of them have the exact same date. Rebuilding the account (several times) did nothing.

Finally I just switched to Thunderbird. I still got some messages with the same behaviour but way less.
