Time machine is being as slow as a tortoise. Are there any alternative back up options?

There are a few threads in here talking about the danger of using a clone as your only backup. Time Machine is your best choice.

tomato/tomahto. It's a legitimate alternative.
The guy asked for alternatives to TimeMachine. Feel free to offer-up something.

Noooo...this has been discussed a couple times with me being a proponent of cloning as a backup solution (mduell or one of his henchmen changed my ways). The problem with cloning is you may clone bad data, Time Machine does incremental backups so if you have bad data you can go back in time and get your data when it was good.
There are other incremental backup programs but I don't know any because Time Machine suits my needs.

ZFS snapshots are an option, but they're not trivial to set up.
How slow is Time Machine? The norm is a few minutes per backup cycle for me.
How much data is it backing up every cycle? If you're churning giant temp files you should put them in a non-TM directory.
What's your backup device? USB? Wifi to a TC?
IOW, have you tried to diagnose your TM "slowness" or set your expectations?

It's taking several hours to back up a gigabyte of data.

Now that we've defined slow can you answer some of the other questions?

Several hours for a gigabyte? What type of files are they? I ran a TM backup last night of about 400GB of data and it took about 4 hours. Either you're copying a gazillion tiny files or you're copying with a slow source or destination. It's not TM that's slow.
