think back to the past everyone. i just looked on amazon's site and they sell a 10.4 upgrade disc for macs but they say you need 10.3 already installed to upgrade from. i seem to remember that all you need is a previous version of osx. (for the record, i have two macs i would like to upgrade, one is running 10.3.9 and the other is running 10.2.8.) neither have the processor speed to run 10.5. is amazon's information accurate?

Macs sold after the release of a new OS but boxed before the release had upgrade discs thrown into the box. I don't recall exactly how picky each one was to be honest but the older ones were less so.

AFAIK 10.4 was a full price upgrade, meaning the CD should work just fine on its own.

The the disc is black, its a proper retail copy and will install fine on its own, if its grey YMMV.

If it's grey, it's not an upgrade disk at all, but a bundled disk that will only work on machines of the series it came with.

If it's black, it can EITHER be a full upgrade (in which case you can install it on a naked disk, or 10.2., or whatever), OR a "drop-in CPU upgrade" (in which case it checks whether the previous version is installed).
It will say on the disk.
