I am running a mac mini with Snow Leopard on it. I've been trying to empty my trash for a few weeks, but I always get the same error 'The operation couldn't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)'. I finally tracked it down to 4 files that are applications (BusyCal, an older version of Quicken & 2 copies of quickbooks. I've thrown away tons of applications in the past & can't figure out what's different this time. If I remove those from the trash, I can delete everything else just fine. But as soon as I put one of those files back into the trash, nothing empties. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Are you comfortable with Terminal shells...?
If so, then proceed with the following:

cd /Users/TYPEUSERNAMEHERE/.Trash/

ls

^ (not a typo, letter "L" and letter "S" lowercase)

Make sure Terminal shows you the files you are about to delete with the "ls" command.

Double-check that Terminal displays the files you want to delete, then delete the files (cannot undo):

rm -rf *

If this doesn't work, then tell us what message Terminal gives you.
