There's something I'm doing not right on my cable modem/airport network, and if someone could straighten me, I'd really love to make this work.

I have internet access via cable modem and ABS working fine for an iBook and iMac. The problem is I can't file or print share between the 2 machines.

My network setup:
cable modem --> ethernet hub
ABS --> ethernet hub
iMac via straight ethernet cable to hub
iBook via airport card

If I turn on personal file sharing and/or print sharing on the iMac, I'm unable to connect to the iMac from the iBook using the Finder connect to server feature (or any other method).

The iMac's network connection is built-in ethernet manually configured. It's the only option that lets me share the cable modem connection.

What I'm really confused about is the role of Appletalk (it doesn't allow me to share whether or not I have it on), and what Rendezvous does in this setup.

Thanks for any help you good network gurus can give this Maine girl.

Another lucky person who gets to respond to their own post. Apparently I can't file/print share unles the iMac's network is changed from manual ethernet to DHCP ethernet. I don't completely understand why I can't fileshare using the manual IP address, but at least this is an OK workaround.

Answering my own question, hmm. Well. I can even rendezvous chat with myself too. It's a good life, sigh.

I tested Rendezvous by chatting with myself once. Had a wonderful, intelligent and engaging conversation.

How's Maine? (I'm from Presque Isle).

Hi msuper,

Maine is very fine especially here on the coast on a perfect blue fall day like this. And the tourists are mostly gone! Yee ha. This part of Maine has a serious lack of other techies to talk with, so I'm thankful for Macfixit and MacNN. I have this vision of walking into a midcoast bar full of tech talk (instead of fishing—gotta love the fishermen tho) like I imagine it to be in Cupertino. You know, order drinks and talk about networking? I can't imagine how good that would be ... boy, is this post gonna get moved.
