Hello
I need help with setting up my sbc dsl . I have the dsl working on my ibook but as some as I plug the dsl modem in my linsys wireless dsl router it stops working. I did use the article in macworld to set up the router but I can’t get it to go. All the required led/s are lit . my os is 9.2 and I have an imac 450 and a g4 733 . Is there something missing in the article in macworld?

turn off power to your dsl modem (I assume it's an ethernet modem). now connect your router (which should be off). now power on the modem, then power on the router. that should do it, except for configuring the router. you may need DNS numbers, so have those handy.

The article doesn't address it, but you must make very sure that you remove the software that SBC gave you (or MacPOET, or whatever you're using) before you try to use the router to work your DSL connection. PPPoE software doesn't get along with the PPPoE hardware that your Linksys router (or any other gateway router) uses, and that almost always kills the connection dead. Basically you can use one or the other PPPoE solution, but not both.

One more thing: the article says you should "keep your firmware current." This is not necessarily a good thing. Router firmware is upgraded to fix problems, provide better compatibility, or offer new features. If you don't have those problems, don't have compatibility issues, or don't need the new features, don't bother upgrading the firmware. "Don't fix what ain't broke" is good advice here, since a power spike or some other glitch while flashing the firmware could give you more headaches than you want to think about.

I just finished setting up one such connection (a BEFSR41 not the wireless, but the problems you are having are probably the same). What DSL modem are you using...the maker and part number (can be found on the underside of the modem). This is usually problem number one...getting the router to talk to the modem. Once this is done, you need to configure the PPPoe of the router to simulate the software. This may require a whole slew of possibilities of the account name / pass, and also the domain name. I can give you the set-up params I ended up using if you tell me the config of your login...like is it xxx@ameritech.net?

IMHO, that is an awful page to use for setting up a router. For SBC and a linksys router, I would use this one

Let me know about the specific modem you are using, and I will help you further.

Funny, I was hoping you wouldn't say that specific model...Check the part number on the bottom, if it is 060-5360-023, then you need to update the firmware of the modem for it to work. Info on how to do that is found here This is important as it says on that page, the part number must match this one exactly, otherwise, no update needed.

I would also make sure you have updated your firmware on your router...this can be done directly from Linksys

Then follow the instructions I linked to in the post above. The config that I would think would work (web page config of linksys router) would be (once you select PPPoe):

Domain name: sbcglobal.net
User: xxx@sbcglobal.net
Pass: your pass

Let me know how this goes for you.

no, what error are you getting when you try to connect? Is it an authentication error or a connection error?

That means your router is not talking to the modem...if you are getting authentication errors, then you don't have the correct login. If you went through the above link (connecting to sbc w/ a router and you are getting this error) I would suggest you call Linksys tech support. I couldn't quite figure out from their knowledge database if your specific modem doesn't need a firmware update or doesn't support routers, but the tech support will be able to tell you the answer to that.

You did select "PPPoE" rather than any of the other selections at the bottom of the first page, right? With PPPoE selected you don't need to do anything with the WAN IP address boxes, nor do you need to select "dynamic IP."

The biggest problem with the firmware for the BEFSR?1 series routers that I've had or seen is that the important stuff for the basic setup is buried at the bottom of that page. The second biggest problem is that when you select something that makse other settings moot, the thing doesn't gray out the unused settings, so you don't know what you really need to fill in.

Here's a big help with all things Linksys: the Broadband Reports Linksys Forum.

the tech found bad wiring , bad connector cover plate and a bad modem. After he fixed all that he plugged the modem in my DSL router I kicked on the G4 ,logged in

I'm online at last.
Now For all the terrific people that responded to my call for HELP!!!!!!!!!
Thank You.......
I've learned a lot about DSL from all of you. Thanks for the support .;o)

Hurray! Congratulations, and welcome to the world of fast(er than dial-up) surfing. What kind of speeds are you experiencing? There are neat tools here at Broadband Reports.com. The speed tests and tweak tests are most usefull.
