I recently posted this in X General. I hope this hasn't been covered here before.

Here's my setup:
G4/500 Sawtooth
10.2.1
HP DeskJet 810c USB

iBook SE 466
10.2.1

Both on an Ethernet network through a small hub

Here's my problem:
I want to share the DeskJet with my iBook. The G4 sees and prints to the DeskJet perfectly (as expected). I've turned on Printer Sharing in the /System Preferences/Sharing/Services on the G4. I've installed the drivers on bothe machines. The iBook will not see the DeskJet over the network no matter what I try. I can connect to the G4 through AppleTalk.

I've been browsing the Apple discussions for the past few hours, and didn't come up with anything. Saw a tip about putting 'local.' in the /System Preferences/Network/ Search Domains. Did that, but nothing.

Any tips? Am I missing something? Is the DeskJet 810c not compatible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We solved the same problem tonight simply by upgrading to 10.2.1 using system update.

OK, I screwed up. It should've read 10.2.1 from the beginning. Sorry about that. Both machines are at 10.2.1, still no go.

It is ".local" not "local."

Im having the same exact problem. What gives?

I have networked printers like this at least 100 times and its super easy. I just don't get it. I can connect to the computer via appletalk but the print center cannot see the printer.

I also tried putting .local in the search domain and nothing...

Go to Sys Prefs > Sharing > Firewall. Make sure Printer sharing is checked, so it is allowed through firewall.

slightly off topic, but is there any way to share a printer that is on an XP machine with my iBook over ethernet LAN?
