I am looking for some help. I currently have a WinXP computer and an iMac running Jaguar. The Mac is connected to a Linksys wireless router over 802.11b, and my Internet works well on both machines (the windows box is "hardwired" to the router).

I have an Epson 740 connected via USB to the Windows computer, and I'm currently printing from my Mac to this printer using CUPS, HOWEVER, the Windows computer needs to be turned on for this to work.

I would like to purchase an Ethernet Print Server that will allow me to print from my Mac to the Epson without turning on my Windows computer. Likewise, I'd like to be able to print from the Windows computer directly through the print server, without having my iMac on.

One such print server I've looked at is http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/ps12u.htm, but it says that printers connected to Macs through this server must be PostScript-compatible. I don't think the Epson is.

(As an aside, I am considering buying a new laser printer (Samsung 1210), and I'd also like this to work as the Epson would, i.e. from both machines.)

Will I be able to do this? Thanks!

This won't help but it is my strongest advice....

Shoot yourself before you try and do this. It is easier and far less painful ;-)

Your biggest hurdle will be to find a network print server that supports both Macs and PCs without having to sell off body parts. Actually there are some that work for any computer that has a driver for the printer-HP's print servers are a great example-but they are often (as in the case of some of the HP print servers) printer-model specific.

Check printer manufacturers' web sites, and contact customer support (not tech support, at least not at first) to find out what sorts of issues you may have to deal with.
