Hello,
I've been through this message board and searched, but can't answer my question.
I have a Jaquar box networked to a Win 98 box. The network works fine from the Mac side... I can mount the C drive no problem through "connect to server."
I have enabled my user profile to be abe to log in from windows, enabled personal file sharing and windows file sharing..
On the Win98 box, the Mac shows up in the Network Neighbourhood as
\\TODD-JACK-8\PC$. It identifies Samba 2.2.3a, so it's finding the Mac, but it rejects my password everytime. I'm using the exact same password as my OSX user...
Q: Shouldn't the PC$ show up as my "short" login name on the OSX machine? Is Win98 completely happy with the OSX version of Samba?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Todd

I'm not a Samba guru, so I'll steer clear of that end of the discussion, but I do know a bit about networking Windows. Basically, Windows wants to see something that's explicitly shared, rather than simply available to share. This is particularly true with printers. If you don't have a folder on your drive specified as shared, Win98 will have trouble seeing it.
At this point, I would refer you to the huge volume of Samba help on the Internet. I have seen many sources that provide help specifically with sharing resources with Windows machines. Unfortunately, since my own needs for such info got put on hold by other priorities, I don't have a record of what those sites were.

I have very similar problem with my gf's winME and my new imac. I am still trying to figure out what my password really is. No luck so far, anyone know how to find out? I tried to use the admin pw but it wouldn't take it. So i dont know, help!

Turns out I had to set up my initial login on the Win 98 machine to be identical to the OS box. Now when I go to Network Neighbourhood and select the OSX machine, it logs in automatically...no problem.

Awwww. That's just too simple and straightforward to be fair! It should have been some arcane command or something. Oh well.
Congratulations on figuring it out and getting things running.
