The problem seems to be in password encryption.
I've never had a problem like this before, netatalk is usually very easy to set-up and works right away.
I've tried SuSE 7.3 and 8.0. I've compiled netatalk 1.5.5 from scratch. I've enabled clear text password and I've enable --with-shadow on the Linux side. No connect.
error 5002 or it just says my user name or password is no good.
The only thing that has changed is that I replaced my Linux based firewall with one of those SMC Barricade devices. These computers are all on the same network though.
SAMBA works fine, and the Macs can connect as samba clients.
Any hints?
thanks!

I'd look at what ports the Barricade has open and what ports are blocked. Maybe SMC decided that a port you were using is particularly prone to abuse from the outside, and it's closed by default. Another thing to keep an eye on is whether or not the router is actually seeing all the machines-and if they're having new IPs assigned that don't match what your Netatalk setup is expecting.

The router seems to see all devices. I must say I like the Barricade so far.
OK, what seemed to fix it was switching the fileserver from DHCP back to a static IP.
I noticed an error when starting rcatalk that said multicast may not work correctly. I've never seen that error when using static IP, so I tried it and I was able to connect!
I'm going to compile a fresh install and see if the default works as well.
I'll get back if anything odd seems to happen.
thanks!

I have to admit that the IP issue was a shot in the dark, but I'm glad it helped you.
