I'm sure my ignorance will show here: I bought a SMC wireless router and an airport card. I read that I can "network" 2 computers (even use Appletalk). I've got one computer connected to the router and the lights are on indicating that it is hooked up, but the airport card doesn't seem to light things up, nor can I create a network connection. I don't have dsl, yet, so I can't do the "configuration" that would normally be done to the router, but I assumed that was for the router to be done only for internet connection reasons. Help . . . or please direct me to a primer.

While the configuration of your router/access point does have a lot to do with your internet connection, it also handles the settings needed to tell it how to handle your machines. In particular, the wireless network name (or SSID) is guaranteed to be something other than Apple's default.

As for a primer, go to Practically Networked for everything you'll need to get a basic understanding of what's going on, and guidance on more advanced concepts too.

Thanks, Actually, when I started up the computers again this morning, the router assigned ip addresses and actually started to work. I was, voila, networked!

Now, I want to figure out how to use the USB epson printer which is connected to my OS 9.2 mac via ethernet (airport card) ibook.

Any tips? I've turned on usb printer sharing and everything seems fine on the 9.2 machine (host), but the ibook doesn't seem to see it unless I'm not looking in the right place.

I tried launching the airport utility program, but its not recognizing the router, so I assume it has nothing to do with it.

Thanks Again

Are you sure the SMC bridges AppleTalk? This is definitely THE BIG QUESTION.
What OS on the "other" (client) Mac? If jag (possibly earlier 10.x), go to Preferences in Print Center and check the "Show Printers Connected to Other Computers" box.
