i read in this months mac addict that if you have a mac thats connected to the internet via modem or ehternet and you have a second mac with an airport card installed. the first mac will act as a wireless basestation negating the need for an airport basestation. is this true because i have an imac connected to the internet via a dsl router and i also have a powerbook that id like to connect via airport but do not have the money to go for the basestation. any comments?

This is a networking question, not an iMac question. That is to say, this can be done with any two macs equipped with airport cards.
I'm sending this to the networking forum.

Yes, it's entirely true.
How you do it varies depending on exactly which OS version you're running on the gateway system (Mac OS 9.x, Mac OS X 10.1.x or Mac OS X 10.2.x). It has also been discussed here about a gazillion times so a quick search should give you a few pointers.

It's a feature, not a cheat.

Roxie is absolutely right; you're not getting something for nothing. In fact you're having to run both machines just to get the second one onto the Internet. What you're not doing is getting the advantages of the hardware base station, including some of the security it provides.

I suspect you have only one airport card. If this is so you are better off getting a non-apple wireless router. They are 100$ and about the same price as another airport card.
If you want it to bridge appletalke as the ABS does look into SMC and Asante wireless routers.
