Hi, Networking Newbie here.
I have an old PowerMac 8600/300 (OS 9.1) and a PowerBook G3 (Pismo)(OS 10.2.1). I would like to access the contents of the 8600's hard drive from my PowerBook and was wondering if a directly connected ethernet cable would do it or do I have to run it through some sort of hub. Do I have to boot the OSX machine into 9.2.2 to access the 9.1 machine or can I use X?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can just use an Ethernet Crossover cable for this without a hub. Make sure it's a Crossover cable.

Don't be rude to people looking for answers to simple questions. It's frustrating for the people asking. Some of us don't have HOURS (in some cases) to search for answers to our questions. Espec. ones that don't need instant answers.
To answer your questions, you need a cross-over ethernet cable, or 2 regular ethernet cables and a hub.
If you have access to a crimper, the pin out for a cross over cable is OPPOSITE on either ends. Normally your pins are 1, 2, 3, & 6, and on the other end 1, 2, 3, & 6 would be the same colors.
Crossover cables switch this around (hence the name). Pin 1 goes to pin 6, and pin 2 goes to pin 3.
Ask your Tech guy at work for 5 feet of cable, 2 heads and a crimper. It'll take you 5 mins to make one. Just cut the extra wires off, if you are going over long distnces they matter, but on a 5 foot cable no big deal. You just need 4 of them. Make sure you save the same colors!
I don't know if Pismo's have the old serial ports on 'em. If they do you could just hook and old school appletalk cable between the 8600 and the laptop. it would be a SLOW network but it will get the job done!

Only the 1998 PowerBook G3 Series (aka Wall Street) has the combo modem/printer port for LocalTalk.
Get the Enet Crossover cable, you'll be much happier. They should only be a few bucks at Radio Shack, Circuit city, Etc.
The 8600 is only 10Mb ethernet, but if you enable file sharing via TCP/IP, you should get reasonable performance.

everyone seems to have missed this bit...
in X's Finder, hit cmd+k, and you should see a list of connected machines. click on your 8600, and take it from there...

I don't think fulmer was being rude. He was being realistic and informative. You said it yourself, if you don't have time a quick google search is 100X faster than waiting for a reply.
a search for "how to network two macs" takes 15 seconds and provides all the info needed.
