Hi all,

I have recently aquired an old 6500/225. It didn't come with a network card and I was wondering which cheap nic cards were compatible with it. I was planning on installing PPC Linux or another Linux Distro on it so the card would have to be compatible with Linux.

Does anybody know which vendors / which cards are both cheap (as I don't want to spend as much on the NIC card as I did the computer) and compatible (PCI) with Linux and Mac OS 8.x

Thanks in advance

Uh, anywhere. CompUSA, uBid, eBay, Staples, Frys, etc. Some are as cheap as $10 new. Check Tech Bargains or GotApex daily for deals.

The issue isn't where you can find a PCI NIC for not much money. The issue is where you can find one that has Mac drivers! Since many inexpensive cards are built with just a few different chipsets, you should be able to search for something like "Mac NIC driver" and get a bunch of hits that lead you to a few, basic driver packages. Once you know what chipsets are supported, then you can start looking for reviews.

OR... You can confront the salesdudes and get them to take a stand one way or the other as to whether the parts they have on the shelves have Mac drivers (included) or not.

Some places just don't hire worthwhile salesdudes, and some salesdudes just wear out and become useless, so try to find the one that everybody else goes to ask questions. Once you find the right one, wait your turn and ask.

I have used cheap 10/100 LAN cards that have the Realtek 8139 chipset on all sorts of Macs, from a 7600, 6500, G3 DT, to my G4/500 which I'm using now (whose built-in ethernet got fried during a thunderstorm). OS 9 and OS X drivers are available from www.realtek.com.tw

I highly recommend the D-LINK DFE-530TX+ as a great solution. Shop around the net, you can find them ranging in average price from $10 to $15.

This specific D-Link card (make sure it's the 530TX+) uses the Realtek 8139 chipset, and as mentioned above, has drivers that work for OS 9 and OSX. It's a bit strange, the card is rarely advertised as Mac compatible, but it works great with Macs.

I've used these cards for years in a whole slew of Macs for years and find them totally reliable- never had a problem and the Realtek drivers have always been top notch.
