Disclaimer: This is not intended to be a flame, rather it is a post coming from an uniformed PC user trying to switch...

I am about to buy a TiBook, but I am a little unclear on the wireless situation. I have a linksys wireless AP, and from what I've read, I should be able to use this with my new TiBook. So the question is, should I get an Airport? Is there any advantage or feature set that I will be missing out on without one?

Thanks

If you already have a wireless access point, you shouldn't have a need for an official "Apple Airport" base station unless you wanted to do somethings like file/printer sharing using AppleTalk (TCPIP is totally fine though).

All you need is the tibook you're looking at and an airport card (an 802.11b card)... You could go with one of a couple 802.11b wireless PCMCIA cards for your tibook, but I'd go the Airport Card route so that you can install it "inside" your tibook and not deal with anything hanging out the side... my opinion of course... An airport card is $99 at most places...

Good luck and enjoy!

Many Thanks. I suspected this was the case, but I didn't consider the appletalk issue. Something to think about, at any rate.

Welcome! As stated above, if you have a Linksys access point you don't need an AirPort Base Station-they do much the same job. Depending on which access point you have, your Linksys may do more-the one with the 4-port router, specifically, does more than the latest Base Station.

The only problem people consistently report when using Apple wireless equipment with non-Apple equipment is a problem getting the WEP keys entered correctly on both ends. Apple's latest AirPort software (which should come with a new TiBook) has fixed this problem-you can simply check off that an entry is in hexadecimal or in plain text, rather than having to put a "$" in front of the entry.

Enjoy!

I recently bought the SMC wireless router which advertises the ability to network with appletalk. I haven't tried it, but maybe yours will do the same. There are some threads in this forum suggesting that appletalk sometimes works even if not advertised as such by the manufacturer.

I just want to be clear on something:

Next year i'll have 4 roommates, I have a TiBook buy they all have windoze boxes. We're going to get a Linksys Wireless AP Cable/DSL 4 Port router for our computers, and I've been looking around at PCMCIA wireless cards. Can I just get an Airport card and be set? I won't need appletalk for anything, I just need the Net.

Thanks
Oz

Edited for clarication

Oz,

You only need the AirPort card for your TiBook. The Linksys box will do all you need, both wired and wireless.
