Hi,
I'm getting an HP OfficeJet D145xi USB printer soon, and I'd like to share it with a couple of PCs running WinXP and Win2K via AirPort. The printer's host will be a DP800Mhz Quicksilver G4 running OS/X 10.1.5. My AirPort base station is an older graphite model with all the software updates installed. I would appreciate you comments and suggestions.

Yeah, please, I'm in need for some solution like that as well.
The problem I was confronted with is that Windows didn't find the printer on its network.
Well, anyone ?

You might well find that its easier to go
the other way, let the XP or W2K box host
the USB printer and let the Mac access
it remotely. The CUPS s/w in 10.2 ROX!

Connect the printer to the PC and sharing via SAMBA is probably the best and easiest way.
Whatever you do DO NOT use the HP USB printer drivers. KEEP THEM CLEAR OF YOUR MAC. They are crap and they slow down 10.2.2 after time.
To print to a shared windows printer do the following:
Unintall all HP printer drivers using the HP intall program and restart.
get the HPIJS printer drivers from linuxprinting.org. They work like a charm and don't slow down your computer.
http://www.linuxprinting.org/tylerb/hpijs/
Use the gimp print faq for info on how to install the drivers and to use advanced options like printing to windows printer via samba and using a cheap print server. They are really good.
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_FAQ_OS_X.php3
It's easy.
You install the drivers, then when you add the printer you hold down the option key and select the printer. Select you printer. Then select Print via SAMBA. Then enter your windows info in the format shown in the directions. http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_...hp3#sambaSetup
I have a HP1115 and Laserwriter connected to my PC. Much nicer than printing right off my mac, takes all the load off of it.

What about sharing a Canon S820 USB printer between OS 9.2 and WinXP? We're sharing a cable modem via a wired router. I've turned on USB Printer sharing, but I have a feeling that that isn't going to cut the mustard.
Any ideas? Thanks guys...

I'm having a problem with CUPS. I'm trying to print from my iBook to my usb printer on my XP machine. File sharing is working fine, etc. Connected with a wired ethernet router.
I think i need help configuring the printer in os X, well, in CUPS on os X. I don't seem to be having any luck. Should the Device URL be "smb://Computername/printername", or what?

I had success with the following format:
smb://workgroup/computername/printername

I, too, would like to print from my girlfriend's win98 box to the HP printer hooked up to my mac.
Since it's a Photosmart printer and does a nice job and I'm not having any trouble with the drivers (they only eat a few % of CPU time, not perfect but certainly tolerable), I would prefer to keep it on my mac- I use my box more than hers (go figure)
Her computer can see mine via smb, but not the printer when I go to set it up. Any ideas?

To "see" the printers I installed Samba Sharing which I got from http://xamba.sourceforge.net/ssp/index.shtml. I have 2 XP Home and 1 XP Pro machines and they can "see" all my iMac real and virtual printers. Having said that I still can't print from XP, it seems to be some kind of permission issue.
