Hey everyone
When I bought my new DP 867 back in September, I bought a 10/100 Hub to connect it with my old G4 400 and cable modem. The cable modem is plugged into the uplink port on the hub, and the two G4s connect to the hub as expected.
Internet speed is as fast as ever, no problems there, and I have a horrible feeling its nothing to do with the actual network, but OSX. Is networking on a LAN in OSX really so painfully slow?
I have all my MP3s on my old G4, and use iTunes on my DP to "stream" from the 400's library, however its often skipping, locking or just stopping when just playing MP3s. (I connect to the 400 using the Apple file sharing connect not Apple Talk although have tried with both). Editing the info on an mp3 not locally stored can take anywhere from 20 seconds to 3 minutes to "ok"
Copying files and moving around the file system remotely is much like that of iDisk, sometimes snappy, but usually dog slow. I'll copy an mp3 and it will take 10 minutes, then another time it will take seconds (like it should)
I remember windows 95 networks running circles around my two G4s, is there something totally wrong with my setup or is it OSX?
Any help or insight would be most greatful.
James

if both macs aren't running the same version of os x, then LAN performance between the two tends to suck bad. sorry.

You need to replace your hub with a router. Your problem is that your attempts at local file sharing are going out to the internet through the DSL modem to your ISP's gateway and bouncing back. You can check this by using the Network Utility in OS X to do a tracerouter from the one Mac to the other.
The solution is to replace the hub with a router like the LinkSys BEFSR-41 which will isolate your LAN from the internet.
Your current setup, by the way, is a security nightmare as anyone on the internet can now access your file shared computers. A router will solve that problem too.

Thanks John
Went out and bought a Belkin router, 99.99 CAD with a 50 buck rebate, plugged it in and it worked right away, no need to mess with the network (thanks OSX)
Seems alot faster and is working as expected when browsing my other mac remotely, hopefully gaming performance will improve too
thanks again for all your help
