Anyone use one of these base stations. I was considering a replacement for my Apple Base Gen1 s it seems my range is decreasing as time goes by. It claims to be Apple compatible and can go up to 22 MBps. Best of all Best Buy has them for $99.

Just bought one of those a few days ago to share broadband cable connection in the house. Set up was easy although not much documentation. Sharing the internet connection is a no brainer, just plug in ethernet cables and you're on, but to set up a real network you have to know what you are doing (I don't). I bought a Orinoco Gold for the wireless connection with a PB G3 and it works fine. I'm learning how to play with the WAN and LAN config, but I can't enable firewall because you have to set the specific rules from scratch, if I set up the default rule, it won't connect to the internet anymore.
I think is a great buy.
If you are more expert and have any suggestion for my network config, it will be appreciated.

Hi
I have one of these routers with two Macs plugged in on the ethernet connections. I got a PowerBook this afternoon with an Airport card and it doesn't 'see' the network over Airport. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Is there anything special you need to do?
Can't recommend it until I get it going.

This is my first message on this board, it's the best forum. I am also intrested in purchasing the D-Link 614+ Base station and wondering if it 's compatable with my new TI 1GHZ SD.

Welcome, Cuz! Yes, any product that is "WiFi" or "802.11b" compatible will work with any AirPort product. AirPort is simply Apple's brand name for their 802.11b compatible products.

I got it to work eventually. By default, the router is set to Channel 6. Airport seems to be set to use channels superior to 10. I set the router to Channel 11 and it started working.
If it works with an 867MHz PowerBook, it should work fine with a 1 Gigger!

An interesting point is that most WiFi equipment seems to work best on channel 7-it's the channel in the middle of the band, and typically the radio equipment is somewhat more powerful on 7. Of course not everything can be on channel 7, so we need to make adjustments. If you find that you're not happy with your range, try moving closer to channel 7-with all of your equipment at the same time, of course.

Thanks for the replies. I have switche my channel to 7 and oddly enough I now get all 4 bars on the airport icon. Strange.
renpar, I'm pretty much a network newbie myself, but it sounds strange that the base wont talk to the internet with firewall enabled. Are you sure its not your computer not being able to talk to the base while firewall is engaged? All you may have to do is find the IP address for the computer and allow that IP access to the base and not really write the whole set of rules from scratch.

D-Link's tech support is really weak when it comes to Macs. I've tried it twice and I wouldn't recommend the product from that point of view. Here's the email I received from them today:
> Dear Valued Customer,
>
> Products: DI-614+
> Operating System: MAC OS X
>
> 1. Start up Windows. If you are asked to log in, be sure to enter your user
> name and password. Click the Start button. Select Settings and Control Panel
> and click the Network icon.
>
> 2. Click on the Configuration Window tab. If you see File and printer sharing
> for Microsoft Networks in the list of items that appears, close the Control
> Panel and go to Enabling File Sharing or How to Share Printers below.
> Otherwise, go to step 3.
>
> 3. Click on the File and Print Sharing button.

Either D-Link thinks that there's a "Start" button hidden somewhere in your Mac OS, or they're being rude and sarcastic. Or they just don't pay attention to customers' requests for information.
At least Linksys comes out and says that they don't support Mac OS, but then they have links to some tools to help you out-like the Mac utility to let you upgrade the firmware on a BEFSRX1 router.
