Can anyone recommend a router for my cable modem connection? I used to have a Linksys BEFSR41 and it worked pretty well (except for frequent firmware updates), unfortunately I sold it. I currently have an Asante FR3004LC and it just plain sucks (frequent stalls, collisions, lockups). I've had a friend who networks for a living check the whole setup and he seems to think it's the router (he installed the network). I just bought an ibook 800 and wouldn't mind getting a WAP and an airport card, but a basic router would do me just fine for now.

I've searched reviews all over the net but I thought that some first hand knowledge from fellow mac users would be more reliable. Any suggestions?

I have a FR3004LC and have had absolutely
zero problems w/ it in the year+ I've had
it and this is on a mixed network w/ PCs, Mac's, VPN, and wireless. I wonder if you just got a lemon unit. Are you running the 2.5 firmware?

Two bits of advice. Asante's products are pretty good too, but they also have firmware issues. If the latest (most fixed up) firmware doesn't correct the problems you're having, maybe you got a bad box. Look up your receipt to see if it's still under warranty.

Second, if you're really down on Asante, go for a new BEFSR41. Just don't bother to update the firmware every time a new one comes out. Unless you need a new feature that is newly supported, it's just another headache for you. I've been running 18 month-old firmware on mine for, well, 18 months, and it's been great.
