I have a linksys wireless router/acess point hooked up to a cable modem. (from at&t). the problem i am having is, when i reset the factory presets, i get fast speeds: 700-1100 kbps. but when i let it run, it slows down to about 100 kbps. it used to run just fine before, the problem just reared its ugly head a couple days ago. do i have a bad router or do i need to change some settings?

What are your router's settings right now? A screen shot of the Linksys setup page would really help here.

Does it slow down at certain times of day?

Under what conditions? Are we talking about pure bandwidth testing, downloading legit (linux) iso's from a big server, P2P?

Is this a wireless issue, or is the computer on CAT5 to the router?

More details for us to help U.

settings are all the default settings on the router except wep. the setup is: powerbook is recieving the wireless signal, and the connection is shared with a quicksilver 867 via sharing control panel. the testing i am doing is with general web surfing and 2wire testing. i have noticed a big hit and certain times of the day, there is no discernible pattern. i think its working ok now, it seems whenever things get slow, i can reset the factory default settings on the router and it returns to its speed.

If you can isolate it to certain times of day, then its not your networks fault but the ISP's. My cable speeds drop drastically in the evenining, just like dial up used to. With the high number of users converting to some form of high speed service, be it cable or DSL, the hardware at the ISP's is taking a hit. You can also bet your home on the fact that none of them are busy upgrading their servers or adding to the number of servers they are using.

Carmine, are you saying that you push the reset button on the router and things get better? That might not be a good thing. A short reset (just a couple of seconds) basically reboots the router, which shouldn't be needed during normal operation. How often does this slowdown happen-hourly, daily, weekly?

im saying that at my linksys setup screen (web setup) i can choose "restore factory defaults" and when i run that, it goes back to normal speed. thats why im worried. it seems to be working ok today, but who knows? i dont want to be resetting my router all the time. do i have a virus or something? it was working fine for about a week prior, no problems.

"Restore Factory Defaults" does basically the same thing as a reset. What version of the firmware are you running? Have you upgraded it recently? Have you added or removed any software on your computer recently?

I just upgraded the firmare this morning. things seemed to be going well, then i noticed a gradual slowdown of my newsgroup and web browsing. so i did a 2wire.com test and my speed was 150 kbps. So i did a factory default reset (i live in a studio, and the wireless router is upstairs in the landlords office), and i did another 2wire test, this time it was 870 kbps. firewall is off, i cant think of what else it can be. any suggestions?
