I'm trying to connect a LocalTalk string of computers (oldies) to my modern ethernet network with high speed internet. Its taken alot of work and this is what i've come up with so far.
I can share internet by running my link mac (the one on both networks) to connect to AppleTalk via LocalTalk and Internet via Ethernet. Then I can run IPNetRouter to share over AppleTalk. Then I can use MacIP on my LocalTalkies to get them on the internet. But no AppleTalk, no filesharing. Alternatly, I can share appletalk by running the LocalTalk Bridge control panel. This only runs under 8.1, which is what I have downgraded my Link mac to. This works great, My GigaBit Dual G4 can talk right to my Centris 610 on LocalTalk. But no Internet. The Trickey part is both. It doesn't work. Here's why. IPNetRouter for localtalk runs over whatever you have your AppleTalk control panel set to. With LocalTalk Bridge you have that set to ethernet, becuase the controlpanel takes care of linking the LocalTalke stuff to it. So IPNR never actually offers internet to the LocalTalkies. Switching AppleTalk to the serial port kills LocalTalk Bridge.
So I can only get one at a time. Internet is more important, but I really want filesharing too. And only OS 9 can do that over TCPIP, but OS 9 1) Doesn't run on 68K's and 2) Can't connect to the internet over a LocalTalk connection. And the Shareway IP Program, that will let me connect OS 8 via TCPIP is still $90 a copy (psssht!). So it would seem I'm out of luck. But I had this one Idea...........
Have my link mac (a 6100) connected the Internet way, running IPNet Router, with AppleTalk connected via LocalTalk and TCPIP via Ethernet. So they will al have internet AND have a compeltely differnet Mac a Quarda 700, also connected to both networks, running LocalTalk Bridge and set up only to share AppleTalk. That should give me everything I need right? I should get seemless internet and appletalk to every single mac!!!!
Oh yeah and don't bother asking why.... just caust its fun
