....I can't get it to work I called Verizon and they assure me my free Verizon Online demo is activated as of yesterday (12/03/02)
A week ago, when I received the offer, Verizon sent me a Westell ADSL Modem (Model 36R515) and a "do it yourself" package for set-up. Keep in mind, I've been using a 56k modem until now and have ZERO experience with DSL. The instructions packaged with the Verizon Online stuff seemed pretty simple, however.
Here are the instructions for setting-up under Mac OS 9.2.2 (yes, there is an OSX set-up also, but that's not an option here):
• Plug the modem's DSL port into the phone line.
• Plug the modem's Ethernet port into my Beige G3/266 10 Base T Ethernet port.
• Set the TCP/IP control panel to connect via ethernet using DHCP server.
• Install provided software (which only seemed to be Internet Explorer...yes, that's correct I didn't see an install for any unusual drivers).........This seemed like a waste since I already have IE 5
It's still not working.
Short of the obvious customer support call to Verizon Online, does anyone here have any ideas?
Thanks for any help
Mike

"Devil ether, it makes you behave like the village drunkard in some early Irish novel. Total loss of all basic motor skills. Blurred vision. No balance. Numb Tongue. The mind recoills in horror. Unable to communicate with the spinal column. Which is interresting, because you can watch yourself behaving in this terrible way, but you can't control it"

The install kit should have also come with "microfilters" which must go on all your other phone jacks-these isolate the DSL signal from the phones and keep them from screwing up the DSL.
Do you have a "sync" light on the Westell, and is it lit? On my model 516 it's the second light. If it's flashing you don't have a good DSL signal getting to the modem.
(Edit corrected which light I said was "sync." I have 4 lights, but the last is a WAN activity light, while the other three are Power, Sync, and LAN Link. These three stay on, and so I had said the Sync light was the "middle" light.)

With my ISP (EarthLink) I had to use my browser to connect to the modem and Log In before I could connect to the Internet. Did you look for instructions like that? The modem config page also has some diagnostics that tells me the state of the connection.
When in the TCP/IP panel do you see any IP address? If you have a 169.x type number it means you have a problem. If you have a 172.16.x, 192.168.x or 10.x number the DHCP router of the modem is working fine any you may just have to log in to your ISP. You have to point your browser to the IP address of the router (ususally ends in .254 or something like that)

I am getting the 169.XXX ISP like you mentionned. Any idea what this means? Is this indicative of a computer problem or a modem problem? Should I attempt to mess around with my extensions or something?

Your computer assigns itself a 169.xxx IP when it can't get anything from outside. This means that your modem is not giving you an address, which might, in turn mean that it either isn't working or isn't cooperating.
Are you synchronized? On my Westell, a steady second light means that the modem is synchronized. Without sync you get NOTHING because there's nothing for the modem to talk to.

Back when I had Verizon DSL (about a year ago, so YMMV), you had to use PPPoE to connect. Did the verizon installer include MacPOET? You may need to use that to connect.

Start with the basics: Do you have a link light on your computer? Are you using a cross-over cable from the modem to the computer? If you don't, you won't be able to talk to it...

I don't believe you need a crossover cable to connect a device to a computer. Usually crossover cables are used to connect two computers. This is because the other device is expecting pair A to be send and pair B to be receive, while another computer is expecting the reverse-it's expecting to see a device, not another computer.
However, do you have everything connected per any diagrams that came with the install kit? Does you modem have a light that says it's synchronized with the DSL signal, and is it on (not flashing)? Is there an indication of a link between the computer and the modem (a link light on the network card and/or a link light on the modem)?
