I knows thats a remedial question and I have searched this forum but I cant seem to find much. I have a pismo (wireless) connected to a netgear 814 router and a PC (hardwired running 2000). I have gigs of music I need to transfer over to the PC but I can't seem to connect the 2, so as to make them see each other. I really thought that there would be some application where the PC's HD would mount on the macs desktop or vice versa.

any application that can achieve that sort of easy GUI mounting? If there isnt how can I make the 2 computers "recognize" each other ?

BTW I dont think that NG 814 supports appletalk- so thats out.

You should just be able to go to the Finders "go" menu and choose "connect to server". Then if sharing is set to ON with the PC it should show up fine. I don't think the PC can see your Mac though.

You can't use Appletalk between a Mac and PC anyway. That is why it is called APPLEtalk

Setup a new user on the Mac and use that to connect from the PC.

I've gotten that error from a 98 machine. Now I'm getting error = -5000 from an XP machine. I've tried creating an account name that is also on my Cube running Jaguar, but no joy.

Is there somewhere that lists the meaning of these errors? They don't seem to be listed at samba.org, are these OpenTransport errors?

As an alternative, you could connect using Cygwin/OpenSSH on 2k. Since your using a wireless connection, it's just as well.

"SMB Connect Error = -36" is article 107096 in the Apple knowledge base.

(Error = -5000 is something to do with ports needing to be open that aren't. Jag must need some non-obvious ports for this.)

After shutting down ipfw, and then getting -36 from XP, I tried my Mac password and was then able to connect.

Smbbrowse (versiontracker) seems to be better for this than the finder.

I tried to post this yesterday but the database was sick...

Windows machines have to have something shared before they can be "seen" on a network-you won't even see the computer you're using if there isn't something shared on it.

There are also issues dealing with access settings and passwords. Once a PC folder is shared, the owner can also set access restrictions and password protect access to it. This can stop you in your tracks if you don't have the PC owner's cooperation.
